The Gift of Giving: Insights on Authentic Generosity

We asked some of the most generous entrepreneurs, artists and creatives we know to talk to us about where they think their generosity comes from.

Jerome Davis

Generosity comes from good energy. I believe in karma and what you get is what you’ve given. Whether we don’t like each other or a complete stranger I wanna be remembered for my work and kindness. Life is short and there’s a need spread love. Read More>>

For me, generosity has always been rooted in empathy. Growing up, I often felt the weight of other people’s emotions and needs—sometimes more than my own. While that sensitivity was overwhelming at times, it also shaped my heart. It taught me to notice the quiet struggles that don’t always get spoken out loud. Read More>>

My generosity comes from a place of passion and a sense of shared community.

It’s truly rooted in the very beginning of my journey with @JessKnowsTheDeal. Before it became a business, it was a “happy accident,” built on the simple act of sharing valuable information—whether it was a coupon deal to help someone save money or a life hack to make their day easier. That desire to give back and offer something of genuine value to my followers was the original spark. Read More>>

I truly believe that if we all take care of our little piece of the world, then slowly and surely the whole world will get better. I know I can’t fix everything, but the little I do to give back to my community makes me feel good like I’m part of something big. Helping children in the community see that you don’t have to be rich to give back. Read More>>

My generosity comes from a belief that I deeply value. I believe that we can all thrive when we encourage and support everyone around us. Growing up, I was blessed to have a strong support system—from my family, friends, and mentors who supported and invested their time and energy in me. This kind of support is very valuable and I can say without doubt, it can have a significant impact on someone. Read More>>

I get my generosity from having a good sense of perspective and empathy. I try to put myself in other people’s shoes, and when I do, it feels so natural to want to help and give to other what I am lucky to have. If I have more than I need it comes easy for me to give back to those who are struggling. To me, it’s not about what you have, but what you share, I want to be someone who adds value to others’ lives, not just my own. Read More>>

I hold the strange and powerful privilege of mobilizing and amplifying a historical movement built upon the generosity of strength, sacrifice, and story. Even though incest abuse has always been taboo, the resilience of survivors has sliced through social stigma of generations past and present. Academic, medical, legal, and artistic literature — sharing narratives of disclosure and abandonment, liberation and loss, healing and chronic health management — has passed through history between hands of those touched by incest and others who support us. Generosity is the hill I’m willing to die on. I have a tattoo of my life motto and it reads: “Givers never lack.” I believe that so heavily and that’s the foundation of everything I do. I didn’t have the best childhood and I really had to fight through struggle as a young adult. I think understanding what it feels like to not have enough or not have what you need gives me more insight into why it’s so important to give. God really put me here as a vessel and I long ago accepted that calling on my life. Read More>>

My ancestors and family! It’s that simple. I stand on the shoulders of giants and have benefited tremendously, in my own life, from the folks who’ve come before me. GrassRoots Middle is inspired by Dr. Mary Bethune who is a pioneer in the education movement, globally. We strive to leave out her legacy by developing young, black/brown, homeschooled middle schoolers to be the absolute best they can be! Read More>>

i come from a family that operated in survivor mode all their life. so much of who i am when it comes to compassion, when it comes to giving back is simply because i come from a family that use to operate so far from that, that i just began to put myself mentally in the shoes of others to see, how would i wish a stranger to respond? a lot of my giving back efforts stem from doing simple daily task like feeding stray cats… nothing too big or grand. but it stems from the saying, that we should try to “be the change we wish to see in the world..” that set me apart from my cousins sometimes.. always wanting to volunteer at zoos, or feed the pigs.. i don’t know.. i didn’t equate it to generosity until these past few years or so when someone else mentioned a guy they knew just having a generous spirit. sometimes, it takes me a long while to realize how the world or people may view others on their deeds. so i just do whatever is in my heart at the time whenever i have the ability to do so. my mom gets on me about it… she often says i am too generous and go without so others can have but i don’t see it as that if my heart is full.
