Tim Peakman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Tim, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
Wow, what a question to kick things off with! My days are rarely the same, varying based on my location and what I’m creating for my online business.
When I’m batching video content for YouTube, I’m often in front of the camera, sharing tips and tools for starting an online business. This is crucial for discovery, so publishing at least one video a week is non-negotiable. Other days involve client calls, which are simple video conferences where I find a quiet space to record them for my coaching clients’ reference.
And, of course, there are days dedicated to passions like snowboarding in Canada. I recall Jeff Walker (an online business coach) mentioning he took Fridays off to ski during winter; I often take more than just Fridays off to snowboard!
Given my personal training background, I also prioritize time for a gym workout or a long walk with the dogs. This variety and the flexibility it offers are what I truly love about building my own online business.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Of course. I’m Tim Peakman, passionate about empowering individuals to build online businesses that truly serve their lives. My brand simplifies online entrepreneurship, providing clear, actionable strategies to help you work less, live more, and achieve the freedom you desire.
I differentiate myself by teaching stress-free strategies and systems, emphasizing sustainable growth and genuine connection over overwhelming tactics. I firmly believe your online business should support your ideal lifestyle, not dictate it.
Currently, I’m dedicated to creating more in-depth resources and coaching programs that help entrepreneurs not just start, but thrive, by building a microbusiness offering both financial success and personal fulfillment. It’s about creating a life where you’re in control, whether that means batching content, connecting with clients, or simply enjoying more personal time.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Ha, I love this question. Before the world tried to define me, I was always drawn to freedom and forging my own path. As the youngest of three brothers, I had an innate desire to blaze my own trail, questioning the ‘how’ and ‘why’ and seeking more efficient or enjoyable ways. I was, to be honest, a bit of a rebel, often finding myself in trouble at school.
This innate drive to forge my own path and challenge the status quo has always been central to who I am. It led me to personal training, where I learned the power of self-discipline and tailored approaches. I even joined the military as a physical training instructor, seeking an active, varied, and challenging lifestyle.
Back then, my perception of business was traditional – briefcases and cubicles. What I know about running a business now is vastly different. So, when technology enabled remote, digital online businesses, I quickly embraced it. This ultimately fueled my leap into online entrepreneurship: the desire to build a life on my terms, free from the conventional nine-to-five, and to empower others to do the same. That spirit of independence and innovation still guides every decision in my business and life today.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely, countless times. Building your own path as an entrepreneur is a rollercoaster, which is precisely why I love it. It’s a stark contrast to being an employee; without someone guiding you, you truly learn as you go.
The journey of building an online business, especially one aligned with your lifestyle, is rarely linear. Days can be overwhelming with tasks, unexpected challenges, or simply the feeling of going against the grain. However, my core belief in the freedom and impact I strive for—for myself and those I empower—always pulls me back.
I recall my early days, the rebel spirit, the drive to create my own path rather than follow a conventional one. That fire reignites when things get tough. It’s about remembering your ‘why’—your fundamental reason for doing this.
Moments of doubt are quickly replaced by a renewed focus on simplifying strategies, building sustainable systems, and connecting with the incredible community of entrepreneurs seeking the same freedom. It’s a constant reminder that every challenge is an opportunity to refine, innovate, and solidify the belief that a business should support, not dictate, your ideal life.
I remember an early online coach asking about my motivation to start my online business: ‘Out of 10 (1 being low, 10 being high), what is your motivation?’ My response was ’10; if there was an 11, I would choose that!’ This is what I ask anyone considering an online business: if your motivation, your ‘why,’ isn’t an absolute 10 (like you’d run through a brick wall to succeed), don’t start. Roadblocks are inevitable, testing your resolve. So yes, I’ve considered giving up many times, but I always return to my ‘why’—the freedom my business provides.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
In short, ‘as close as possible.’ This is always the challenge for me: to be as authentic online as I am in daily life. I define authenticity as being genuine, real, and true to oneself, aligning internal thoughts, feelings, and values with external expression and actions.
I’ve observed many people present differently online than in person (it can be quite surprising when you meet them). However, striving to show up authentically and genuinely aligned with your values makes a significant difference in building trust and connecting with the right audience.
Creating online videos, a learned skill, naturally requires heightened energy to be engaging on camera. If we were chatting over coffee, my on-camera energy and enthusiasm would seem out of place. While I wouldn’t change who I am or what I stand for, a relaxed, in-person environment simply doesn’t demand the same increased pace, pitch, and intensity required for the camera.
So, the pursuit is always to present as close to my true self online as possible. This becomes more refined over time as I continuously work to ensure my core values and personality shine through, even as the medium demands different energy levels.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I’ve always been deeply intrigued by how things work, truly understanding the ‘how.’ Through extensive testing of what succeeds and what doesn’t (and I’ve experienced far more of the latter), you genuinely grasp operational dynamics. For me, this directly translates to what people search for online: creating content that appears in those searches, then offering the next logical step.
I’ve delved deeply into the entire online business framework—from optimizing for online search to delivering comprehensive training programs and ultimately achieving client results and impact.
With over 10 years in the online business world, I now clearly see the complete picture of what’s needed for success: what’s required, in what quantities, and in what order. This is what I teach now: how to appear in search and serve clients with impact, all while prioritizing your lifestyle.
