Where do you get your resilience from?

Resilience is often the x-factor that differentiates between mild and wild success. The stories of most of the wildly successful folks in our community have exhibit an extreme degree of resilience and we’ve come to believe that if our goal is to help our community achieve great outcomes we have to help build resources and knowledge around how one can become more resilient.

I was actually just reading an article about the time Broadway legend, Kristin Chenoweth, was forced to choose between THREE different acting jobs, the lead in a little developmental show called Wicked, Sondheim’s last new musical to be produced in his lifetime called Bounce!, and a role on the hit TV show, The West Wing. All I could think about when reading this was “Wow, I wish that would happen to me in my acting career!” Read more>>

Rob and I have each grown up in different cultures and lived in countries far from our homelands (Canada and Thailand, respectively). Working with people around the world has taught us to empathize with others and to develop an appreciation for the unique aspects of each environment. I especially had to overcome challenges related to language when I first came to the USA for graduate studies at UGA, and we have both had to learn to adapt to life in foreign countries without the support of nearby family. My resilience comes from my parents. As a child, I learned very quickly that sometimes life does not always go the way we plan. I’ve been able to witness them go through financial hardships, being unemployed and even health issue and knew that the situations were weighing heavily on them, as well as me and my sister. If you asked me this question while in my younger years, the word “resilience” would not be the first adjective that came to mind while describing myself. Like many of us, in our early adult lives we spend time exploring, making mistakes, learning, and ultimately (hopefully) growing from these experiences. Along with these experiences, I think that something else happens simultaneously – we begin to develop an inner strength and self-trust, a sense of self confidence.  Read more>>

As I started out my professional career as an attorney, it taught me a lot about how to dig deep and provide results even in the face of great challenges. But functioning in such a high-stress environment required me to handle stress in a productive and healthy way. I became certified in Kundalini and Hatha yoga and started hosting Sound Baths and Manifestation classes. I was able to apply my discipline both professionally and personally. Read more>>

Resilience, in my view, isn’t just born out of thin air. It’s a concoction, brewed over time through various life experiences, professional hurdles, and personal challenges. For me, my resilience has been forged in the furnace of real-world trials, both in my personal life and my long-spanning career of 17 years as a personal trainer. Read more>>

I was raised by bold women, my mom and both of my grandmas, who were considered “too much” or brazen for their respective generations. From a young age I’ve had to overcome unique challenges. At age four, my parents divorced, and everything seemed to go downhill for the next… several years. Growing up with such a broken family is what made me fall so deeply in love with all things comedy. Comedy became my escape from the chaos of my childhood. Moving around a lot made me the new kid at school. Read more>>
