Where does your optimism come from?

Optimism is the invisible ingredient that powers so much of the incredible progress in society – from entrepreneurs and investors to artists and creatives who believe in something and are optimistic enough to risk their time, money, and reputation. We asked some of the most optimistic folks we know where they think they get their optimism form.

Optimism is a product of knowing that success will occur with hard work, accepting failure and trying again. Optimism is also a product of knowing that success may require a change in strategy. Read more>>

I believe my optimism has been learned by the people in my life who have modeled optimism and I see optimism as walking hand-in-hand with hope, faith, and resilience. I had hardworking and hardy grandmothers. My maternal grandmother was a farmer’s wife who helped in the barn, managed the family finances, raised six children, cooked everything from scratch, made her kids’ clothes, and hardly complained. For me, optimism goes hand in hand with my faith. The ability to look beyond what is currently happening and to believe that there is a better outcome. To believe that all things are working out for my good. My journey has been one of starts, pauses, and pivots constantly trying to align to what is best in the moment. Initially, I started out as a blogger for fun. Then with the onset of the pandemic, I began to branch out into doing virtual conversation workshops and panels where participants could watch, engage, and ask questions on various topics from embracing natural hair to planning for the new year. Optimism for me comes from the intersectional and unique voices that grace the grassroots poetry events that I host. Every poem shared is a testament to the strength and beauty of L.A.’s queer community. By creating a platform for these voices, I’m constantly reminded of the positivity and resilience that define queerness. Read more>>

My optimism stems from a deep sense of self-awareness and focusing on my own journey. After spending 16 years working with the NFL, I know what it’s like to defy the odds. Reaching the heights I did was a long shot, but it required unwavering belief in my talents and a conscious effort to not get distracted by what others were doing. I completed four internships before landing my first full-time job, but by 2010, at just 30, I became the youngest head of PR in the NFL. A wise mentor once told me to focus on my tasks and let my talent be my guide—advice that has shaped both my career and my business. Read more>>

Let’s face it, everyone goes through times in their life when it seems that the Universe has it out for you. You’re dealing with one crisis after another and things like optimism or gratitude are simply not available to you. I have absolutely experienced my share of turmoil, including a rare cancer diagnosis, witnessing both of the World Trade Towers collapse from the rooftop of the building where I lived in the West Village on 9/11 and the complete annihilation of my life from alcohol and drugs 20 years ago. Well, if I can heal and transcend such enormous trauma and now lead an abundant and grace-filled life I know that you can too. Read more>>

The source of my optimism is my love for planning parties for women, helping them celebrate important events in their lives, such as bachelorette parties, birthday anniversaries, girls’ night outs, and even divorce parties. I grew up outside Hollywood near Malibu and Calabasas and have always loved the entertainment and music industry. I used to throw amazing private parties with local music bands, lots of booze, and gorgeous atmosphere models, and I want to continue this spirit of fun in the future as well. Read more>>

Ez Flames

EZ Flames began as a shared vision between Kiera Carroll, Brandon Boyd, and me. We each had a deep appreciation for fragrances and the atmosphere they create, but starting a candle business was uncharted territory. Despite not knowing exactly where to begin, we were driven by a strong desire to step into the world of small business. That passion for candles and scents was our foundation, but the optimism that fueled us came from different places. Read more>>

Honestly, my optimism comes from life showing me time and time again that even in the darkest moments, there’s always a glimmer of hope. I’ve faced some tough challenges growing up—when I was just a toddler, I drowned in a pool, and doctors didn’t think I’d make it. They told my family I would be in a vegetative state and suggested institutionalizing me. But instead of focusing on what I can’t do because of my disability, I’ve learned to embrace what I can do. Now, I’m here—living, loving, and making candles that bring joy to others. Through it all, I’ve discovered that no matter how hard life gets, there’s always a reason to be thankful, share a little positivity, and enjoy the simple things—like a cozy moment with a handmade candle and a spark of hope. Seeing my brothers succeed. Being able to witness first hand the friends that I’ve grew up with make their dreams come true gives me motivation to keep moving forward with everything. Also a big part of it is my twin brother Hasahn. He always makes sure to help me with whatever I need. Whether it be helping me get to and from photo/video shoots to simply telling me to keep going. A lot of stuff happening in my life was cause of him and I couldn’t thank him enough. Read more>>

I would say my optimism comes from the people around me. I have been blessed to have a close family, and loving friends that have supported my positive mindset for the majority of my life. I also had a near death experience while in college and that really changed my perspective on life. Every day and moment we are given in life is a blessing. It takes far more energy to stay stuck and negative than to find the beauty in all moments. Read more>>
