We’re looking forward to introducing you to Yiwen Qian. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Yiwen, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Dance has always been my reset button. Whenever I dance, all the stress, tangled thoughts, and anxiety from work just fall away. It’s one of the few times I feel fully present, really in control of both my body and my mind. I especially love dancing with people I’ve grown alongside. The energy and synergy, and the support and sense of community make me feel empowered and like I truly belong. Being part of that has been a source of joy lately.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Yiwen Qian, New York based producer. I focus on creating films, music videos, and visual projects that explore personal experiences, identity, and human connection. What I love about my work is the balance between the creative and the collaborative, bringing together diverse talents to tell stories that resonate deeply with audiences. At the heart of it all, I’m drawn to projects that challenge perceptions and create meaningful connections.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was in 7th grade when I landed a role in a feature film. At the time, I was just a kid stepping onto a set, unsure of what I was doing, but I realized I could contribute meaningfully to a project. It was thrilling to see how much collaboration and care went into making something come alive, and empowering to know that my perspective and creativity could make an impact. That experience planted the seed for my path as a producer.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that it’s okay to not have everything figured out yet. Trust your instincts, embrace mistakes, and keep following what makes you feel alive, even when it feels uncertain or scary.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
A belief I’m committed to, no matter how long it takes, comes from a sentence a famous and well-respected actress once imparted to me: ‘鹰飞得再高,它的影子永远在大地上,’ which means, ‘No matter how high the eagle flies, its shadow always stays on the ground.’ That phrase has accompanied me for years. It keeps me grounded and reminds me to stay connected to what I truly care about, finding and telling genuine stories that resonate on an emotional level. No matter how long the process takes, I’m committed to creating work that reflects that grounded authentic approach.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
I think I would regret not taking on challenges or pursuing the things I’m truly passionate about. Whenever I look back, the moments that shaped me most were the ones where I pushed myself into something unfamiliar or intimidating. If I chose the safer or easier route, I know I’d regret not giving myself the chance to grow, take risks, and create work that genuinely excites me.
