Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lady Syren. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lady, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I personally feel like confidence wasn’t “lovingly” bestowed upon me in traditional sense. Or by way of nurture. It was very much something I had to borrow or steal bits and pieces of when no one was watching. Especially having learned so harshly and often, that catching the attention of the wrong people yielded detrimental results to my psyche. Sadly, I didn’t QUITE figure out how to do this until high school, And writing played a big part in developing that.
I guess I had to learn to tell myself all of the nice or motivational sentiments that I hadn’t yet received from the world around me. Speaking love and light into one’s self is in fact a divine skill. One I’m still honing in some ways. Ultimately, developing a healthy sense of self required listening to the positive inner voice, more often than I listen to the negative one.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Vee, P.K.A (Poetically Known As), Lady Syren. A pen name and spiritual embodiment of both my feminine essence, and the fire I exude while executing my passions. As a black women, advocacy and equality lies at the foundation of my platform. On the forefront and behind the scenes, I work to place empowerment, diversity, inclusion, & equity at the forefront of any stage I’m gifted. However, I can effortlessly tailor the performance to fit any vibe!
This year, I will be sharpening my public speaking talents, by stepping into more keynote speaking opportunities and broadening my reach. This on the tail end of me releasing my first book, called Crowned in Melanin. So it’s been an exciting year thus far; and it’s only February!
Crowned in Melanin is an evocative collection of poetical musings that explores what it means to be black in a country like ours, while also navigating my own womanhood. It offers a very personal reflection of these experiences. In short, this, is my love letter to blackness.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Authenticity, communication, and writing are all things that have served me well, and kept me grounded in an ever changing world. The only way to improve MOST things, is to simply do them. Engage with yourself, your surroundings, and all that you do with honesty. That’s first and foremost. Even when it doesn’t always turn out great, approach it as a lesson. Dissect it. Study it, Embody the improvements and move forward.
