Meet Sereena Morrison

We recently connected with Sereena Morrison and have shared our conversation below.

Sereena, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.

To avoid burnout, establishing boundaries is essential. In 2021, I experienced burnout and felt my passion for makeup dwindling. A conversation with someone in my community opened my eyes to the importance of turning off work as an entrepreneur. This advice helped me realize that boundaries are crucial for protecting your passion. By setting clear limits, like designated work hours and time for self-care, I was able to reconnect with my love for makeup. Boundaries are a form of self-respect that help sustain your passion and well-being in the long run.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a celebrity makeup artist with over seven years of experience, specializing in exceptional soft glam looks. I’ve worked with Grammy Award-winning icons and participated in major events like the Caribbean Music Awards and New York Fashion Week. My work has been featured in a Footlocker campaign and showcased on celebrities with a combined following of over 12 million on Instagram.

What sets my brand apart is the personalized, empowering experience I provide to each client, whether they’re among my 3,000+ clientele or new faces. I’m passionate about making people feel confident and beautiful, and I’m excited to continue expanding my services and exploring new opportunities in the beauty industry. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey as a makeup artist were consistency, optimizing the value of my knowledge of makeup, and incredible customer service.

1. Consistency: Consistency has been the cornerstone of my success. It’s not just about showing up, but about maintaining a high standard in every aspect of my work—from the quality of my artistry to my presence on social media and my communication with clients. For those early in their journey, my advice is to develop a routine that reinforces your commitment to your craft. Whether it’s practicing new techniques regularly, maintaining a consistent brand presence, or ensuring reliability in appointments, consistency builds trust and establishes your reputation over time.

2. Optimizing the Value of My Knowledge of Makeup: Knowing makeup inside and out has been essential, but what truly set me apart was learning to leverage that knowledge to create value for my clients. This means staying updated on trends, understanding different skin types and tones, and continuously educating myself. My advice is to never stop learning and to find ways to share your expertise—whether through tutorials, workshops, or personalized client consultations. This not only showcases your skills but also builds your authority as a trusted expert in the field.

3. Incredible Customer Service:** Great customer service is what turns a one-time client into a repeat client and a loyal advocate for your brand. It goes beyond just the service provided—it’s about creating a memorable experience, being attentive to your clients’ needs, and making them feel valued. For those just starting out, focus on listening to your clients, being responsive, and going the extra mile. Small touches, like following up after an appointment or remembering a client’s preferences, can make a big difference.

For anyone early in their journey, developing these skills takes time, but they are foundational to building a successful career. Stay committed to your growth, seek feedback, and continuously refine your approach. By prioritizing consistency, maximizing your expertise, and delivering exceptional customer service, you’ll set yourself up for lasting success in the beauty industry.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was teaching me how to multitask effectively while building my character. They encouraged me to take on different roles—working various jobs, diving into the risks of entrepreneurship, and being a full-time student—all at once. They showed me the power of resilience and versatility, teaching me to never limit myself.

Instead of thinking in terms of “this or that,” my parents instilled in me the belief that I could do “this and that.” This mindset has been instrumental in my journey, allowing me to embrace multiple passions and roles without feeling confined to a single path. Their guidance helped me develop the skills needed to juggle many responsibilities and take bold steps toward my goals, knowing that I am capable of managing it all.
