Meet Heather Davis

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Heather, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Being a new hairstylist in the industry is daunting sometimes. I’ve come from a long career in the service industry and decided to go to cosmetology school in my 30’s. I still struggle with imposter syndrome, but I feel like the more I work in this industry, I’ve been able to realize that I have the drive, the skill, and the passion for doing hair.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am currently in my 1st full year behind the chair. I have had the pleasure of assisting, being an associate, and a full-time stylist since starting school at Paul Mitchell Denver in 2022. I am currently behind the chair at The Cutting Room Salon in Wheat Ridge and offer precision cutting, color, blonding and facial waxing. I provide my services at an all-inclusive gratuity-free hourly rate. I am so excited to pursue this passion and build a beautiful career helping others feel beautiful. I love being able to create a space for my clients to feel comfortable and heard.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Really dive in to your passion.
2. Be humble and let ego leave the building.
3. Never stop learning.

The advice I would give anyone starting a journey in to their passion, is to always find a way to keep changing and adapting with the industry. Learn from anyone and everyone you can. Find a mentor and work hard.

I am still new in my journey, but have loved every step of this process.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Being a mom of 3 awesome kiddos and working full-time, and being present for my amazing clients, can be pretty overwhelming sometimes. I really just try to focus on the task at hand and remind myself to enjoy what I have while I have it. My husband has been really great in helping me to speak 3 things I am grateful for out loud and that can turn things around when I get too hard on myself. Taking care of yourself is paramount to being able to care for others.
