Meet Rebekah Ondejko

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rebekah Ondejko. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Rebekah, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.

Burnout can be a real challenge for hairstylists due to the physical demands and the need to maintain a high level of personal interaction. After years of trying to please everyone around me I realized that I needed to create a work environment that worked for me and my needs. I limit the number of clients I take in a day to avoid coming home late at night sore and exhausted from over extending myself, I work 3 full days a week and 2 half days which allows me to be there for my clients while leaving a few hours in the week to take care of myself and personal needs. Avoiding burnout is about prioritizing yourself and your needs first, if I’m not my best self then I am not providing my best services and I wont let that happen.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

As an alternative hairstylist with a flair for the bold and the unconventional, I specialize in crafting eye-catching styles that break away from the mainstream. From vivid, head-turning colors to sleek smoothing treatments, I offer a range of services designed to express your individuality.

Whether you’re looking for dramatic extensions to amplify your look or want to push the envelope with a new, avant-garde haircut, my private studio is the perfect haven for creativity and personal expression. At Pretty in Punk, I blend artistry with technique to deliver a style that’s uniquely yours.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One skill that has been most impactful to my journey as a hairstylist is technical proficiency. Mastery of cutting, coloring, and styling techniques is crucial. This includes knowing how to execute various haircut styles, apply color accurately, and utilize different tools and techniques. Another important quality is my creativity and vision. Most times, clients aren’t sure of what they want or they’re tired of getting the same style they’ve had for years. They want someone with fresh eyes to offer them ideas and options based on things like their coloring, face shape, lifestyle, etc. Lastly and arguably most important, interpersonal skills like communication and customer service. As a professional it is my job to translate what the client is envisioning in their head into real life. I understand it’s not their job to know what shade their root color is or what tone of blonde would suit them best and that’s where I come in. I make sure to set reasonable expectations so that I can always exceed them.

For anyone early on in their career, the best way you can develop yourself is to listen. Be open to constructive feedback, be open to learning, be open to the idea that there are people out there that know more than you do.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

My ideal client is someone who embraces bold, unconventional styles and views their hair as a form of self-expression. They’re excited to experiment with vibrant colors and edgy cuts and value a collaborative approach, trusting my expertise while sharing their vision. They appreciate detailed, personalized service and are committed to maintaining their unique look. Open communication and a sense of adventure make for a dynamic and rewarding styling experience.
