Kerri Herlihy shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Kerri, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: When have you felt most loved—and did you believe you deserved it?
Actually just this past weekend I celebrated my 50th birthday and felt incredibly loved. I was surrounded by my closest friends from every chapter of my life. My fiancé Jason organized the whole thing and it was truly so special
I think everything deserves that kind of love, including myself.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Kerri and I have been a professional makeup artist in the New England area for the past 30 years.
I started off at an early age with MAC cosmetics, and after about 10 years in retail I left to venture out on my own. I was lucky enough to work with some of the top fashion photographers in Boston and New York and had my very first publication in Rolling Stone magazine.
In 2010 I decided to try my luck in the wedding industry where I have been ever since. I still work wirh area photographers on photo shoots, and do a lot of Television work, but weddings are what keep me the busiest.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Definitely my relationship with my parents. They have always been incredibly supportive of me in every aspect of my life. I would not be where I am without them. We still talk on the phone everyday!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Early on in my career, when I left the security of the retail environment, it was incredibly hard financially to get by. I was living in a tiny little apartment in South Boston, barely able to pay my rent. I came very close to just getting a 9 to 5 and giving up on ever becoming a full time MUA. I even got a desk job for a few months and immediately realized I had to keep trying. After a few years of struggling I finally built my clientele and never looked back.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Empathy.
Genuinely caring about others. We live in a world right now where we really see how cruel humans can be to each other. Social media has brought out such a dark side to people. I hope we can get back to kindness.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am absolutely doing what I was born to do. Some may look at it as “just makeup ” but it can be very powerful. Helping people feel confident is one of the greatest feelings.
