Kerby The Photographer shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Kerby, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
At this moment, I feel that streaming is what’s truly calling me. As a photographer and artist, I have so much to say and share, yet I haven’t always felt I had the right platform to do so. Through streaming, I believe I’ll finally have the opportunity to be more open, connect more closely with my supporters, and share my stories, advice, and perspectives with other photographers, creators, and artists who may be facing similar challenges—or who simply need motivation to keep pursuing their dreams and goals.
I also see streaming on Twitch as another door opening for me to showcase more of what I’m capable of. Throughout my life, I’ve always known I could do more, but I didn’t always have the opportunity to fully express it. For example, many people have told me I’d make a great DJ because I know how to read a room and understand a crowd, as well as because of my music taste. I’ve also been told I’d make a great streamer due to my personality—how outgoing, engaging, and sometimes funny I can be.
That said, I feel most like myself around people I’m comfortable with, and I’m genuinely looking forward to building that sense of family with my supporters through my streams. I’ve always been more comfortable behind the camera rather than in front of it—not out of insecurity, but simply because that’s where I felt most at home. However, I now feel ready to step forward, embrace the camera, and share more of who I am.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kerby, also known as Kerby The photographer. What I do is in the name but I am a fashion and lifestyle photographer some might call me an editorial photographer or just a Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.
My brand I think is interesting because of the unique locations and models that I work with. My work has always been complimented on its quality, not just the image itself, but down to the details of my choice of model, location and outfit even the hidden Easter eggs I put in my photos that tell a little bit about who I am and my interest. I am currently working on being a bit more transparent with my supporters. I want the people that view my work to feel part of the process when bringing my visions to life. I started releasing short videos documenting my photo shoots and my lifestyle as photographer and creative director. I call them “LOST TAPES” because these videos are filmed on camcorders that give off a old VHS aesthetic. You can find them on my YouTube channel; which is youtube.com/kerbythephotographer.
I’m a big fan of these videos that I’m putting together and uploading onto the Internet because it creates a feeling that I once felt as a kid when my parents and I used to go to our local movie rental called Manny‘s in Chicago
And even blockbuster. Something about popping in a VHS hearing it wind up and watching it play on the TV was exciting for me. So I try creating that same feeling with these videos I call “LOST TAPES”
I’m also very excited to start streaming and going live interacting with my supporters.
So make sure y’all go follow me on Twitch!! @KerbyThePhotographer
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
That’s the thing—the world never had to tell me who I needed to be. From childhood to now, I’ve always felt comfortable being myself. Growing up, my mother gave me the freedom to express who I was and to live life authentically, while always emphasizing the importance of safety.
Now, as a man, I want to set that same example for anyone who watches me and for those who have joined me on this journey.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Many of my struggles have taught me to remain humble, to always have faith in God, and to keep my head held high. When you’re down, there’s only one direction to go—and that’s up. I believe success alone can never teach someone those lessons.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
There is a streamer on Twitch who goes by the name Fanum. I began watching him at the beginning of 2025, and I’ve truly admired his character, personality, humility, and sense of humor. There’s something about him that inspires me to strive for that same level of greatness in the streaming world.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I believe they would miss the unique imagery, the beautiful models featured in my work, and the high-quality content I consistently create. More than that, they would miss the lifestyle and creative vision I share overall—me, KerbyThePhotographer (KTP).
