We recently had the chance to connect with Sharon Goodenough and have shared our conversation below.
Sharon, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Most mornings start with a wagging tail, a walk in the fresh air, and that first hit of sunlight that wakes up my mind as much as my body. A good stretch follows as painting may feed the soul, but it does nothing for the hamstrings!
Mornings are when my mind’s firing on all cylinders, so that’s when I dive into the admin and business side of being an artist: emails, prints, planning, and all the behind-the-scenes bits that keep creativity flowing. Once that’s done, I head into my artist studio, where inspiration takes over. With music, a podcast, or an audiobook playing, I lose myself in the creative process. I try to capture snippets of my painting journey for social media, giving followers a glimpse behind the scenes, though once I’m in the flow, I usually forget to press record!
In the evenings, while I’m preparing dinner, I often create or share social media content, usually a behind-the-scenes glimpse (assuming I’ve remembered to record something!) into my art practice and creative life. It’s such a lovely way to connect with collectors and followers who enjoy seeing the process unfold.
Later, I unwind with reading in bed, my nightly ritual for balance and inspiration. I’m currently exploring books on quantum healing, a subject that fascinates me and often finds its way into my art and mindset.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a seascape and nature-inspired artist, I love to paint with oils, and my work is really about bringing a sense of calm, peace, and harmony into the world. My journey here hasn’t been straightforward. A few years ago, during perimenopause, I felt like I had completely lost myself, my confidence disappeared, my energy dropped, and creativity felt out of reach. Picking up a paintbrush was what slowly brought me back.
Through painting, I rediscovered joy and resilience, and that experience of transformation is now at the heart of everything I do. Collectors often tell me that my paintings transport them to a place of bliss or a meaningful memory, and for me, that’s the most meaningful part, knowing my art is making a difference in someone’s day. I feel so lucky that my work has the ability to do this.
Each piece I create begins with a story. Before I even pick up a brush, I write directly onto the canvas, sometimes a poem, a line from a song, or words that capture emotions I want to release or intentions I want to weave into the finished piece. Those hidden layers become part of the painting’s energy, even though they’re painted over.
I like to think of my art as a gentle reminder that beauty and calm can exist even in the stormiest chapters of life. I share my journey openly — the challenges, the humour, and the lessons — because I know how important it is to feel seen, especially in midlife, when everything feels like it’s shifting and you can suddenly feel like a ship without a rudder.
Right now, I’m gearing up for the busiest season, art fairs, group shows, talks, and a radio interview. It’s a lot, but I love it. I love how art can connect us on such a deep level, and I feel passionate about encouraging others to follow their own creative spark. I’ve learned just how valuable that is, and I want to keep passing that message on somehow.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed I wasn’t good enough, never quite measuring up, always questioning myself, even into adulthood. The funny twist is that my married name is now Goodenough. So now, whenever that old doubt tries to creep back in, I can’t help but laugh. I might even change my middle name to More Than!!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell her to ALWAYS trust her gut instinct, it will lead her in the right direction, even when others doubt you, question you, or say you’re wrong. Let them, I’ve found that it usually says more about their own fear and weakness than it does about your truth and strength. BELIEVE in YOU!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
For me, happiness is a harmonious home, nourishing food, and loved ones around the table. I treasure those get-togethers with family and friends who know me so well that I can simply relax and be completely myself.
At the heart of everything I do is connection, with people, with nature, and with my own creativity. I believe in creating a life that feels calm, grounded, and authentic, where what you do each day aligns with who you truly are. Art, home, and heart all flow together for me, they are my foundations.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes, I literally tap dance to work every day! Creating art has always been my dream, and I feel so grateful to have the support, the opportunities, and the energy to do what I love. I wake up genuinely excited, and the fear I used to feel has transformed into growth. My mind is constantly buzzing with new ideas, sometimes so much that it’s hard to keep up!
I used to stare at a blank canvas, paralysed by perfectionism, procrastinating instead of painting and worrying what others may think. Over time, I’ve learned to let go of expectations, paint the things that make me happy, and let the process guide me in the moment. That shift has been absolutely life-changing.
