Meet Brandon Lin

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brandon Lin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brandon below.

Hi Brandon, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I would say that my strong work ethic first and foremost comes from my dad and the way that I watched him work as I grew up. He would constantly have a deep passion and concentration in his work and he always made sure to do the best he could. At the same time, the people around me whether my friends, co-workers, or other family members have helped develop my work ethic into what it is today. I firmly believe that actions speak louder than words and therefore, I always strive to demonstrate this belief through my work ethic, perseverance, and commitment to everything I do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am currently a filmmaker specializing in cinematography, camera & steadicam operation while also working within the camera and grip/electric departments. Recently, I just finished my second year as an MFA Film Production student at Chapman University’s Dodge College. I started to fall in love with filmmaking while I was in high school and then decided to pursue it as my major for undergrad at Ringling College of Art and Design. To me, filmmaking is special and exciting because of the stories you can tell. You can bring to life a story that can emotionally impact or inspire audience members.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back I think that from all the challenges and adversity I’ve experienced, I would say that resilience, integrity, and, adaptability have been the three most impactful qualities that I’ve gained. Resilience has taught me that no matter the ups or downs that come my way it is important to continue to keep moving forward, putting one foot in front of the other. Working with integrity and being able to adapt to changes has shown me that doing so, is the best way to finish a task or to overcome difficulties.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

I would say that my professor and mentor at Chapman University, Michael Grady has been the most helpful in helping me overcome challenges as well as develop essential skills that I need to be successful in the film industry. He has taught me the necessary skills and mindsets that I should have to overcome the challenges that I may or have already faced. He has also taught me skills in cinematography and lighting which has helped me tremendously in taking my work to the next level.
