We were lucky to catch up with Britney Powell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Britney, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I believe that I obtained my work ethic from my family dynamic. I was very fortune to have been raised in a well versed and cultured environment. I witnessed both my mother and father working full-time jobs and going to school to further their education. I’ve also had inspiration from various family members. Their careers ranged from owning barber shops/salons to being financial advisors. I believe that was something that was simply instilled within me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My business was curated when I witnessed that food prepared with LOVE, actually can heal.
I specialize in American, Seafood and Caribbean dishes. I first started out catering private events which grew to weddings, business events and the list goes on. When Covid-19 hit it caused me to think outside the box. So I decided to begin a kitchenware line, custom blended seasonings, infused olive oils.
I am proud of my resilience. It has been difficult to remain creative and be involved in every aspect of my business. Small business owners know that we are the owner, marketing team, customer service reps, accountant, etc. It can be overwhelming at times. But I push through every single time and produce top quality results!
I have an E Cookbook that was released on Amazon “Guide To Making Quick Flavored Packed Meals : Start Cooking Today With Simple, Easy, and Healthy Recipes for Absolute Beginners”! I have an upcoming launch of custom blended seasonings, Infused Olive Oils and Balsamic Vinaigrette, in June 2023! I will also be releasing another cookbook in the upcoming months. I have so many staple pieces that will help you achieve a restaurant quality meal at the fraction of the price and time.
I want them to know that my brand is based upon love. That is my number 1 ingredient. Every single item I have to offer my customers have been hand crafted and produced with pure love.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My top three qualities is that I am very personable, extremely passionate about my craft, and I open to growth in all aspects of life. I would say to someone early in their journey to ask yourself ” is this something you can do if you could no longer profit from it”? That question alone will let you know where stand. It will let you know if this is really your passion or just something to pass the time. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! Do your own research, testing vendors, purchase, test samples and DO NOT RUSH. Remember that you’re curating a brand that will be your legacy. Take as much time as you need to build your brand.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I begin to feel overwhelmed, I meditate and regroup. I light my Sage or Palo Santos to clear the negative energy and listen to positive affirmations. I also listen to Audible books because they feed your subconscious mind. Some of my favorite books to listen to on Audible: “Manifest Now” by Idle Ahmed, “Daily Self-Discipline” by Martin Meadows, Affirmations for Black Women by Naomi Ray and Binaural Beats. I also listen to Eric ET Thomas, Les Brown, and Tony Robbins first thing in the morning to start my day. This has changed the trajectory of my days and week. Try it and let me know how it helps you!
