Meet Bryan Asbury

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bryan Asbury a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Bryan, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I think a deep belief in what you’re doing or what your goals are helps you to develop a work ethic. Sometimes with certain projects, you don’t even know where to begin. So, you do what we’re taught as children when we’re learning to walk, you start in small increments. A great example of this is my story “The Mariachi Man.” My goal has always been to adapt my works into movies or television shows, and I knew I had all the elements for a great suspense thriller with this particular story. I knew I had to promote it, and I also knew that I had to build a fanbase to create momentum if I had any hopes of getting movie producers to be excited about the project. I used my book tour in the summer of 2023 to do just that. Fans were amazed when I told them what my goal was and really showed a lot of interest and support. I addition, I used any and every opportunity that I could to spread my message to this masses. This included any television, magazine or newspaper interviews that I did. This in turn helped me tremendously when I began pitching the idea to different studios and movie executives. I’ve learned that you have to be your biggest promoter in this business!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I was a kid who fell in love with movies. I was drawn to anything that was thrilling or suspenseful, and I loved how the characters in many of those stories drew you in. I started to imagine some of the people in my life becoming like those characters. I would picture them enacting outrageous scenes, and soon, a plot would be constructed in my mind. I then became an author and started writing stories that focused on retribution and vigilante justice. I love twisted antagonists who manipulate and often hurt those around them, but ultimately meet an untimely and often gruesome demise. Because I think that’s what many of us hope for in real life, justice in the form of karma for those that do harm to others. I’m currently working with renowned Mexican horror director Henry Bedwell to adapt my story “The Mariachi Man” into a screenplay. I also just recently signed with one of the raddest and most respected horror publishers in the industry, “Evil Cookie Publishing.” I couldn’t be more excited with the direction that my career is going in.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Passion, drive and focus. And again, you have to believe in what you’re doing. You can do whatever you set out to do as long as you have these elements. It also helps to have people in your life that support you. I was lucky enough to have my wife Amber, who has been a huge source of help and inspiration to me through the years. I would advise those that are starting out on their journey to allow a certain amount of time each day to focus on their goal. The term practice makes perfect still holds true to this day. Positive visualization is another often underutilized technique. Picture where you want to be in life. This puts you in the right mindset and helps you stay on track.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am an author turned screenwriter who is always looking to connect with other motivated directors or producers out there. I aim to bring back the feel of the 80’s and 90’s cinematic thrillers such as “Cape Fear” and “Misery,” just to name a few. I can be reached at ram_6000000@comcast.net.
