We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carlos Scantlebury. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carlos below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Carlos with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I get my work ethic from being an immigrant — from leaving everything familiar behind in Panama to chase the American Dream in the United States.
Moving from Panama to the U.S. wasn’t just a change of address. It was a decision rooted in sacrifice, faith, and responsibility. I came here knowing that nothing would be handed to me. I understood that if I wanted opportunity, stability, and a better future for my family, I would have to earn it through discipline, long hours, and resilience.
Back home in Panama, family is everything. That value didn’t change when I crossed borders — it became even stronger. The pressure to succeed isn’t about pride; it’s about providing. It’s about making sure my family has security, education, and opportunities that maybe I didn’t have. That responsibility fuels me every day.
As an immigrant, you learn quickly that excuses don’t pay bills. Hard work does. Early mornings, late nights, doing the jobs others may not want to do — that’s part of the journey. You learn to outwork the room, stay humble, and stay focused. You learn that consistency beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
The American Dream isn’t just about money. It’s about freedom. It’s about building something from the ground up. It’s about proving that where you start doesn’t determine where you finish. Every obstacle, like language barrier and foreign education becomes motivation to compete in the construction industry.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey in the construction trades, three things stand out as the most impactful: work ethic, attention to detail, and adaptability.
Work Ethic: In construction, showing up and putting in the effort consistently is everything. Projects can be tough, long, and unpredictable, but the people who stick with it and give their best every day earn trust, experience, and opportunities. For young tradespeople, focus on building habits of reliability—show up on time, meet deadlines, and never cut corners.
Attention to Detail: Whether it’s forming a foundation, finishing a pool deck, or pouring a driveway, the small things matter. A clean line, a smooth finish, or a properly leveled surface can set your work apart from everyone else. Practice patience, double-check your work, and learn to take pride in the quality you deliver.
Adaptability: No job ever goes exactly as planned. Weather changes, materials shift, or client needs evolve. Learning to problem-solve on the spot, stay calm under pressure, and adjust quickly is critical. For newcomers, expose yourself to different types of projects, watch experienced crews, and learn from every mistake.
My advice to young trades entrepreneurs: work hard, pay attention, and stay flexible. The skills and habits you build now will carry your career further than any shortcut ever could—and over time, they’ll help you grow a reputation for excellence that clients and crews respect.
