We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eden Iris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Eden, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
By focussing on the process, and the experiencing of learning something new, rather than the outcome. It’s still a work in progress for me, honestly. But I’ve found that it can be exhilarating to learn new things, make mistakes, and feel like a beginner again. So I do try to get out of my comfort zone a lot — it helps me to let go and get out of my head. Collaborating with people you trust is also a wonderful antidote to imposter syndrome.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I love to write original songs. I record most of my music in my home studio.
I’m excited to announce that I have a new single, “Sunshine Motel” coming out on January 12th, 2024. It’s always felt like a special song to me, so I’ve spent quite a bit of time on it, and I can’t wait to share it. It was my first time collaborating with New Zealand producer Ben King, which was really cool.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say: being open to new experiences, being intentional with your time, and consistently seeking out positive collaborative experiences can make a big difference.
The music industry can seem disorientating at times, and a collaboration done right will get you out of your head, bring out new inspiration and a fresh perspective, and can give you the opportunity to learn new skills and approaches that you may never discover otherwise. It’s also way more fun!
Additionally, it can be helpful to not put too much pressure on yourself to get big results immediately. Worthwhile things to take time, and sometimes you may need to sit with a song for a while, or mull over an important decision.
It also helps in the long term to find a rhythm/routine which is sustainable. That way, you’ll feel grounded even when there’s uncertainty in other areas of your life.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Since I was a teenager, I’ve had trouble with an overuse injury in my hands from playing the guitar. It became so intense a few years ago that I couldn’t even tie my shoelaces or perform many basic tasks with my hands.
These days I am so grateful to be playing guitar again! I now have a daily routine where I wake up and immediately do various stretches, Tai Chi, and strengthening exercises. This routine was a game changer for me. I also need to make sure that I’m breathing deeply, because this can play a big role in the amount of tension I carry in my neck and my shoulders. I have re-learned how to play the guitar in a much more relaxed style through a wonderful teacher called Jamie Andreas.
