We recently connected with FERRELL SURETTE JR and have shared our conversation below.
FERRELL, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
When I was a child I had nothing. Being that I came from a broken home filled with domestic violence and at times no family income I had to make do with what I had. It was a struggle but I was able to overcome the challenges. That being said as I grew older I found I had a talent that could be valuable to the community and began finding inspiration all around that allowed me to grow my knowledge and share my experiences with others.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Recycled cycles of Texas takes used an unwanted bicycles, fixes them up to be given to the underserved areas around Houston. Over the past nine years we have given 1140 bicycles back into the community.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I have to say that ingenuity, persistence and knowledge are the three major Skills that I needed in order to make recycled cycles of Texas grow. We had to persistently look for revenue streams to fund the charity, we had to be persistent in finding areas around the city that could use recycled bicycles, and we had to use our knowledge on how to fix and repair any type of bicycle that was donated.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Currently a number one obstacle is finding funding for our mission in the past we had worked with United Way and that revenue stream has dried up so now we’re back to her asking for donations and scheduling fund drives to make up economic shortfalls.
