Meet Gary Beauford

We were lucky to catch up with Gary Beauford recently and have shared our conversation below.

Gary, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

For me it’s relying on & trusting in God to be my source in all that I do! So whatever room I’m in I bring the confidence God has given me to walk in the abilities & gifts bestowed on me from Him.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Well I’m a dancer, teacher, & choreographer in the entertainment industry. I’ve been blessed to work with Kanye West, The Weekend, Xscape, Keith Sweat, Jacquees & Rihanna to name a few, I’ve been in this career fueled now 22 years & it has been an amazing journey! Through this journey I’ve been able to travel the world doing what I love & can’t thank God enough for all He has blessed me & allowed me to experience. My most recent work or project was being assistant choreographer for The Queens of R&B tour this past summer.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back on my career this industry has helped me to build a thick skin because you can receive a lot of no’s in this industry which can be a deterrent for those with out a strong sense of who God called them to be. Outside of having thick skin I would say networking & being personable, I’ve learned that you have to be able to speak up & sometimes speak for yourself so you can get the next job or opportunity. Lastly I would say love for what you do is very important! If you don’t love what you’re doing you want persevere through the hard times, understandable that nothing is perfect & you will go though adversity, but when you love it you’re able to endure & not let adversity distract or deter you from your goal.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Man I can name so many people who have been a help to me throughout my career. One thing I’ve learned is we can’t do anything by ourselves, we need each other in order to really succeed. No one can do it alone! But just to name a few of course God first cause without Him I would be & have nothing! My wife for being the amazing backbone & support for me & my career, My mom for doing the best she could to make sure she was an example for persevering, Culture Shock DC, Luam, Rhapsody, Jared Grimes, Marv & his wife Marvelous Enterprises, Kiki Ely, Xcel Talent, Sakinah LeStage, Cici Kelley, Daryl Foster, Groove2musik, UED, Brandon Jones, Jeremy Green, Marvelous, Amanda Grind, Chuck Maldonado, Tom Hill, Anthony Burrell, Charm Ladonna, Jermel Williams. The list can go on & on. But theses are just a few of the people & organizations that have been apart of my journey & the reason for the entrepreneur I am today!
