Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Much, a Wisconsin-based graphic designer, writer, and photographer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
For the past 18 years, I have built my career on creativity, resilience, and a determination to find my own way. As a graphic designer, writer, and photographer, I’ve developed my skills through persistence, curiosity, and a deep passion for what I do while navigating life with vision in only one eye and reduced hearing. Because I’ve been partially blind since infancy, a result of a rare eye condition called Rieger Syndrome, the way I work and create isn’t something I’ve had to adjust to—it’s simply how I’ve always navigated.
There were certainly learning curves, especially early on, plus adjustments, and moments where I had to rethink my approach, but I embraced each challenge and accepted it as part of the process. Through trial and error, adaptive tools, and sometimes starting from scratch, I discovered techniques and workflows that worked for me and they helped me thrive in my business without limitation.
People are often surprised about my visual impairment, especially since my work is digital and involves such intricate details and components like balance, color, and angles. My ability to create vibrant websites, stunning design projects, and capture clients with a photojournalistic photography style is exceptional – and from the outside, one would never guess the person behind the screen or lens is partially blind. My sight has never defined what I’m capable of; it simply shaped how I create. I’ve focused on my love of design and let the enjoyment of helping others lead the way. That mindset continues to be a solid reminder that my expertise and business aren’t about perfect conditions, but that they’re leveraged on perception, perseverance and heart.
From a young age, design and writing have always been something that I have been drawn to. From doodling on paper corners to crafting short stories and excelling with creative projects, words and art have always been front and center. It has carried me through difficult times and has given me a welcoming space to escape and flourish. No matter what curveballs have been thrown my way – and there have been many, my two children, Katelyn, 9, and Lucas, 4, have helped me to find my purpose. I want to teach them that confidence and hard work facilitates success and no matter the conditions, you are the author of your own story. On the business side, working with clients and hearing their positive feedback continues to inspire me in my career and that sheer appreciation is abundantly uplifting.
I am truly lucky that I get to do what I love every day—and each day is different! It can mean building a website for a small business, helping a startup develop their branding materials, writing fresh blog content for a busy business owner, or photographing a line up of products ahead of launch. I am always so excited to work with couples on creating elements like invitations or favors for their wedding, or sitting down to interview a source for an article. Writing those stories whether human interest, travel, or entertainment pieces, is a rewarding experience. Connection is important to me and no matter the project, watching it transform from an initial idea and evolve into a completed product is something I’m incredibly proud of. Even more, I am so grateful for all my clients all over the country and beyond that have given me a chance to showcase my creativity. They have allowed me to not only celebrate my abilities and reinforce my purpose, but to also confidently value my own self-worth without measure.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Being a business owner is incredibly empowering—there’s nothing quite like being your own boss and building something that reflects your passion and purpose. As an independent writer, graphic designer, and visual communicator, no two days look the same! There are days that I hit the ground running and power through my entire order queue in full, but there’s also days that a project may require a little more attention and followup with a client. I am always at the keys, updating websites, editing photos, answering emails, checking in with clients, or deep in concentration on project layout and design. I work closely with small businesses to design websites, develop product packaging, and create cohesive branding and marketing materials that truly represent who they are. I collaborate directly with clients to bring ideas to life—crafting custom graphics, writing catchy descriptions, creating modern and styled imagery, and pulling every detail together into a polished, unified final product. Alongside that, I also write blog content as a ghostwriter for a wide range of businesses across a multitude of industries and also contribute to various print publications, which keeps my work dynamic and ever-evolving.
Beyond a primary focus on business-related offerings, I enjoy working on meaningful pieces like special event invitations and personalized gifts, I love being part of moments both big and small! I feel very in tune to my client’s and respect their journeys. I have a long-standing client that has placed multiple orders over the years for baby shower invites, only to experience several heartbreaking late-term losses. Getting the email requesting a birth announcement from her was celebratory and tugged hard on my heart strings, but at the same time I was beaming in excitement for her and sketching out a beautiful watercolor nursery print as a surprise gift. I truly want the best for my clients and their happiness makes taking on the orders even more meaningful. It’s not just about the job I am hired to do, but it’s about appreciating the people placing those orders, too.
To me, every project is an opportunity to create something unique, and that’s what makes my career so fulfilling. My clients really value the close-knit aspect of my service. As a solo designer, I work with every client independently; if they have questions, I am the one responding. That connection is really important because it means that you aren’t working with a handful of different people in a huge office, you aren’t referenced by an order number, but instead, you are working alongside a fellow entrepreneur and creative who is rooting for the success of your business just as much as you are.
This job is special because it gives me the opportunity to really make a difference with my skills. In addition to my service offerings, I am a proud volunteer graphic designer for five non-profit organizations and by volunteering my time and talent, I am able to support them in their missions. This has included doing flyers and signage for a missing person’s organization’s annual gala, a logo and fundraiser materials for a children’s charity, and weekly social media graphics and blog posts for an animal shelter. It is an honor to bring my abilities to the table to help in this way.
I am excited to share that this past January I launched my Creative Access Program. Through this program, start up and small businesses of all models can apply for a discounted or negotiated rate for essential business design services. This program is free to apply and is not based on credit, but looks at budget feasibility. It helps business owners get started with a branded foundation which can influence marketing efforts and sales. My services are priced to be truly affordable, which I am most proud of, but sometimes having a website built or a logo made is still out of budget for some businesses. This program gives them access to gorgeous work to kickstart their goals. I had a client come to me inquiring about website design services, thinking it would not be a financially possible option for her. Instead, my program helped her save 50% on these services and receive a logo plus a fully-customized website with cohesive branding, digital special order forms, and an online integrated cart feature. A week following her site launch, she was invited to sell her baked goods in several shops in her area. By being able to have a website built, it created a professional platform for her to showcase her business to potential customers and that was a very powerful moment for her. I want that feeling for all my clients, no matter their budget.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities have been the most impactful in my journey: a genuine passion for helping others, creativity, and strong communication skills. I’m naturally extroverted and have never been afraid to speak up, which has allowed me to confidently connect with people, collaborate on ideas, and build meaningful client relationships. While I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Leadership, being largely self-taught in graphic design pushed me to truly understand the process, experiment freely, and to continually grow and build my portfolio.
Equally important has been humility and perspective. As a small business owner myself, I understand the needs, expectations, and budgets of my clients. That insight has shaped how I approach every project and allows me to create work that is not only beautiful, but practical and valuable.
For those early in their journey, my advice is simple but powerful: stay organized, believe in your skills and what you offer, and always remain open to learning. Even after nearly two decades, I’m still learning something new—because knowledge truly is power. Set clear boundaries in your business, and don’t compromise your values. Be kind and professional, but know when to walk away if something isn’t the right fit. Most importantly, be willing to put in the work—growth doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency and dedication, it absolutely happens. It is said Rome wasn’t “built in a day,” and well, your business won’t be either. Don’t cut corners, but be open to adjustments; the wrinkles will get ironed out along the way.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who truly values the amount of work that goes into thoughtful, custom graphic design, writing, and photography—not just the final product, but everything happening behind the scenes. For example, on New Years Eve, I log into all my client’s websites and change their footer date to reflect the New Year so it’s fresh and ready to go. I take pride in those types of details and it is wonderful when clients recognize that level of care. Having a loyal, on-call designer is great for a small business, and it feels like a job well done to be able to respond to client’s update request emails telling them I had already taken care of it for them.
I also find that I am drawn to clients who enjoy collaboration and open communication—those who want to share ideas, trust the process, and build a relationship beyond just placing an order. Finding humor and being able to laugh together makes the job extra fun. Getting to know my clients and their businesses allows me to create work that is truly meaningful and aligned with their brand. There is so much involved with this, like knowing ahead of time to alter deadlines because a specific season is busier for a client’s business or being able to suggest potential collaborations with them based of their offerings and current marketing tools.
Most importantly, my ideal clients value my originality, transparency, and creativity. When those qualities are appreciated, it makes for a strong, successful partnership. I don’t use templates or resell designs—everything I create is personalized and built specifically for each client. That is the biggest benefit of a hired graphic designer – having someone rooted in your corner all the time helping to elevate your business or project. My clients want eye-catching elements for their business or special events – and that’s important to me, too. By hiring me, they know they’ll never have a piece of work that can be found in thousands of other like-niche businesses, and that’s key.
