Meet Kristin Meredith

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristin Meredith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kristin, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

My mother. My father passed away after a terminal illness when I was 15, and my mom raised me single-handedly. She worked full-time until I was out of college and had no patience for laziness. We lived in the same town until 1996, and I remember calling in sick for work one day after having too much fun the night before. She came to my apartment and told me to get to work immediately.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My business is named KMM Collective, it is an e-commerce business selling women’s clothing and accessories. The business is six years old this year but for the last two years I have been selling my own clothing designs made by artisans in India and Peru. I have sewn all my life and studied fashion design in college so the special thing about my job is watching a hand drawn design of my own arrive at my house exactly as I had imagined it. And to know the customers love wearing my designs. The business has grown substantially over the last nine months and so has my inventory including the addition of handbags.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Two of the most important skills I ever learned and continue to improve on is communication and customer service. I am from Alabama and I grew up working in an Alabama based department store named Parisian that was known not only for their fashion forwardness but also for their customer service. Being an ecommerce store with no brick and mortar requires you to work even harder to develop relationships with your customers. These skills have been invaluable to me.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Scaling my business. 2024 has been a very good year and my customer base is growing so I have had to increase the number of garments I am producing. This has not been an easy task and I have been trusting my gut. Thank goodness it is working.
