Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lawrence Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lawrence, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Photography has been more than a business, passion, and art in life. To be honest, it’s a way I deal with depression which has been an everyday battle for me. Sometimes I wake up sad and unhappy, other days it feels I’m being covered with cement and unable to escape from the pit. There’s many days I question my value and my worth where I ask myself, “Why am I here? Would the world be better if I didn’t exist? Is life even worth it anymore?” It’s a constant battle, even if you’re maintaining and coping with the mental health. Trust me when I say depression is a real thing, but that doesn’t mean I let it consume me or stop from living and loving life.
Doing photography has been my escape and my way to cope with depression. Each moment I capture behind the lens is more than just a memory, its Passion and Art. I’m not only serving clients, but I tell a story about those in the image and the man behind the camera. When I it turn a vision into a masterpiece it’s
a constant reminder what I bring to this world and my daughter, even when others look past me or don’t see the gifts and potential.
My business has always allowed to speak up more about depression and mental health. We all have demons were battling within, but I want to be an example that despite depression, mental health, or trials you go through in life…you can and will overcome the obstacles. I not only want my daughter and my mother to see me win, I want others to know that depression is a battle you can win. At times I thought I was alone, I never was…I just needed the right supporting cast and foundation. My supporting cast will always be my mother and daughter, and my foundation will be L.Wright Productions.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the owner, the vision, and passion behind L.Wright Productions. I’m a photographer and videographer with a background of creative writing.
My style of photography isn’t just creativity and energy, but its more about story-telling and passion behind the lens. I utilize science and knowledge behind lens to paint a masterpiece and create a moment to share for many years to come.
I’m very passionate about my business and treat clients as they were my own family to ensure a great experience they can cherish forever.
I’m currently rebranding my website where you can contact me personally for booking, questions and promotions running throughout the year. As well be able to see current, new, unreleased and behind the scene material on how the masterpiece is brought to life.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Dare To Be Different
Versatility
Be a Risk Taker
Those three qualities have allowed me to be the creative visionary that I am today. Instead of being like others, I wanted to embrace who I am and mold myself into my own style of photography on and off camera.
My biggest advice…
Step out your comfort zone, embrace who you are, and become your own. You don’t have to be like everyone else that you see. Just be your own, learn, and mold yourself to be great as you want to be.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I love both my mom and my dad, but my mom has been my hero and a huge impact. She knew about my depression and helped me battle through the obstacles I was facing. She understood me, listened and delivered, more importantly she never judged. She pushed me to open up and get help with depression when I felt it was consuming me mentally.
Its hard to say where I would be without her support, probably not where I’m at today. I don’t even want to think about where I would be without her, I’m just blessed she played an inspiration and impact in my life.
