Meet Marion Simms

We recently connected with Marion Simms and have shared our conversation below.

Marion, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

My work ethic definitely comes from my parents and my family. They all owned their own businesses and set a great example by being dedicated and devoted to their clients, going the extra mile as far as service was concerned and always being available to listen.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Born and trained in England, I have been part of the skin care industry for over forty years and have worked in many different capacities including teacher, beauty therapist/aesthetician, business owner, lecturer, consultant and writer. I specialize in customized facials that target each clients individual needs using a blend of electrotherapy and carefully selected products. I treat everything from teenage acne, extreme sensitivity and aging skin.

In 1988, I co-founded the trade magazine Skin Inc with Allured Publishing which remains to this day one of the pre-eminent industry resources for hands-on education for beauty professionals

I have also lectured at the London College of Beauty Therapy and the East Surrey College in Redhill, England.

My philosophy is simple – maintaining your appearance should be part of a full time commitment to preventative health, self-esteem and well-being. My clientele comes from all parts of the city and state, and all walks of life. And it gives me great satisfaction to see each one relaxed and happy when they leave the salon with glowing, healthy skin.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

There are always challenges when you either own your own business or want a dedicated career. The first thing to have in place before you start is to focus on what you are passionate about.

That will keep you going when hardship occurs and it will! Learn from it – there are always lessons and silver linings in every hiccup along the way.

Secondly listen – and I mean really listen, and pay attention to your clients’ needs. It is so important.

Thirdly, find a mentor who can guide you, share experience and keep you on track.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Actually, the biggest challenge we have faced looking back has to be COVID. We were closed for almost a year which was extremely tough but clients saved the day by paying forward and buying products and gift certificates.

Right now we are busier than ever but face fierce competition in terms of product sales posed by online shopping and social media influencers. We are tackling this by regular sampling and really educating our clients during their salon visits. There is so much misinformation out there.
