Meet Matthew Michael Ross

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matthew Michael Ross. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Matthew Michael, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I believe my confidence and self esteem started with my mother and father. After my real father died when I was a baby, my mother brought my step father into my life. So I had what seemed like a normal upbringing. And I say that knowing how many different types of families there are, not saying one is more normal. I just meant I was lucky to have two loving parents. Then after your formative years, it’s all about working hard and believing in yourself. You know inherently when you’re not trying your best. When you do your best, you’re confident.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a storyteller first. I write stories that mean something to me with a message that I want people to hear, whether it’s about tolerance, consumerism, pain, forgiveness, or redemption, I want my work to always be the best quality that I can afford. My latest feature, INVISIBLE, just won top prize BEST FEATURE at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival and is playing October 5th 9pm at the Awareness Festival LA Live Regal Cinema.

Logline; The search for his missing friend David forces CB down a dangerous path, fraught with deadly roadblocks, and only his shared pain with Heather, a young woman with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome,) can help him find the truth.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Be grateful but assertive. Be humble but ask for help when you need it. And stick to your convictions and don’t let anyone get in the way of your dreams. Know your craft and the craft of others you’ll work with. Collaborate and listen to people but never forget what you need to achieve.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

Independent film is not respected the way it should be. So many great independent films and filmmakers never get a chance to be played on Netflix, Hulu, or MAX. Distribution is a nightmare. I’m working to be a disruptor and to change the way the game is played, for fairness.
