Meet Wei-fang Chang

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wei-fang Chang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Wei-Fang, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

To me, being an “artist” is just one of many labels I wear. Whether as a video designer, creative technologist, or multimedia artist, I find joy in how new media arts guide me through various spaces—from my mind to others’ bodies, from physical environments to the broader world. My creativity thrives when I observe how audiences interact with, interpret, and embody the work. There’s immense satisfaction in witnessing the dynamic flow of media as it takes shape and influences the real world.

A key lesson from my artistic journey is to trust the process and recognize that a piece of art extends beyond the object itself. Art is a gateway to expanding our understanding of the human experience, and staying true to oneself is vital in maintaining authentic creativity.

To keep my creativity alive, I keep my eyes, emotions, and heart open. A video designer I admire once said, “Eyes are the best learning tool, even when you’re gazing upon a pile of trash.” This mindset reminds me to find inspiration everywhere, even in the most unexpected places.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a video designer and multimedia artist who was raised and born in Taiwan, and am currently based in Los Angeles, though spiritually in the universe. I specialize in video projection design and interactive art particularly within live experiences.

As a video designer, I find my sparkles in live performance that creates the aura, which evolves uniquely in that time and space, through our sensations in a performance. I am intrigued by the unique of live performance which allows me to immerse in chaos, confusion, ecstasy, or fear, and gives me the other psycho-somatic space to detach from the external world. I am interested in challenging the liveness of video arts by extending it outside of the frame of the window screen onto a spatial dimension within performative environment.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Consistency in practice, openness of mind, and sincerity to people.

No matter how small the step, consistently making progress in your artistic practice is essential. Regular practice not only sharpens my visual language but also deepens my sensitivity to art. In the field of interactive media, where the technical threshold is often high, maintaining consistency has been crucial for developing and refining my skills.

Keep your eyes, emotions, and heart open. Human emotions go far beyond what words can express. I appreciate the immense sensations art brings, especially in live performances. It’s fascinating how art offers a way to communicate feelings and experiences that language alone cannot fully convey, creating a shared, immersive connection that transcends words.

Being kind as a human being is fundamental. While it might seem separate from the art-making process, kindness is essential when we connect with others. It forms the basis of genuine relationships, both in life and in the creation of meaningful art.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

Connecting with people has been my biggest area of growth over the past year. I’ve learned to step away from my desk and screen to engage sincerely with others. By initiating conversations with people from various fields—without any specific agenda, like job hunting—I’ve found these interactions to be enriching and helpful in developing a new mindset through the perspectives of others. These connections aren’t purpose-driven but rather about kindly sharing what I’ve been working on or discussing recent challenges I’ve faced. It has helped me organize my own thoughts while also refreshing my outlook.
