Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yusto J. Yona. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Yusto J., so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

1. Continuous learning has been the key to my professional development, and being up-to-date with the latest trends and knowledge is vital to being more effective and competent.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I, Yusto J. Yona, an Oncology, Infectious Diseases Pharmaceutical Technician previously worked in different institutions Aga Khan Hospital as an Oncology and Infectious Diseases Pharmaceutical Technician and at the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital as an oncology, bone marrow, and infectious diseases pharmaceutical technician in the Oncology/Bone marrow and pharmacy department
I have outstanding experience serving as a medicine dispenser in specialized and super-specialization clinics, including cancer medicines and immune-suppressants, cardiovascular drugs, and kidney transplant medicines.
My roles are forecasting, quantification, ordering, and storage of bone medicines and medical supplies. Moreover, reconstitution, administration, side effect monitoring, and adverse effect surveillance are abilities and part of my daily routine.
Further, In the Department of Oncology, we have different significant roles in drug reconciliation and therapeutic drug monitoring. Understanding concepts of biosimilar and biologics as a drugs inspector are other areas and tasks as a
pharmaceutical technician to advise distributor and procurements officer in purchasing, quality, and safety.

I am trained, as a pharmaceutical in a hematology unit. My roles are attending and advising prescribers, and nurses of
best pharmacy, prescribing, and administration practices. In the same line as a hemato-onco pharmaceutical
technician, I attended and provided education on the rational use of medicines to hemophilic, hematology
malignant, and sickle cell patients at the Benjamin Mkapa hospital.

My previous working experiences with Kaitale Pharmacy, in 2021, Dreamland Pharmacy in 2020 and Primrose Pharmacy, in 2021, as a medicines dispenser in community pharmacies. I attained extraordinary experience in pharmaceutical care that qualifies me to deal with different types of clients to their satisfaction.

I am a committed Pharmaceutical personnel, having trained in infectious diseases at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in the United States of America and Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 with a better understanding of rational antimicrobial use and infectious prevention control., I am also certified by the Pharmacy Council.

Currently, I am a Pharmaceutical Technician training for Pediatric Onco-Critical Care to Recognize the global
burden of childhood cancer and the challenges to delivering onco-critical care worldwide, identify the impact of these challenges in the care of patients, Understand the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of sepsis and organ failure in pediatric patients with hematologic/oncologic disease, Define common complications of cancer-directed therapy and hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and appropriate management, common complications of cancer-directed therapy and hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and appropriate management, Identify measures to improve supportive care for critically ill pediatric hematology/oncology patients and Formulate a plan for a quality improvement project to improve the care of critically ill children with cancer-relevant to the local setting, including a specific aim statement.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Chemotherapy and Bone Marrow Medicines Reconstitutions
2. Research Writing
3. Quality Improvement

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The primary challenge I face now is my insatiable hunger for success. I am driven by a desire to gain more knowledge and enhance my competence in my career. As I see more opportunities and potential ahead of me, I am motivated to strive for greater achievements. This ambition fuels my dream of furthering my education and going back to school.
