Hi Valencia, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being the only one in the room who looks like me requires two essential qualities: confidence and resilience. I learned to understand that being the only one who looks like me in the room is an advantage, which aided my ability to stand when most may believe that I should kneel.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an IT professional with a niche for creativity. One day, I found a solution to my tech experience and creative gift: my business, Intricate WebDesigns. The most exciting thing about being a web design business owner is bringing my clients’ visions to reality. While pursuing my IT career, I have been in business for three years. Within these three years, I have taken breaks and slowed down my momentum, but I have not stopped. Recently, I was granted with the opportunity to invest in a website builder platform and other technical and non-technical requirements needed to establish a functioning website.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience, discipline, and individuality. Nothing is built overnight; Take the creation of earth and humanity, for instance. Set goals and make sure to reach them to the best of your ability. And remember, you can’t go too far without knowing who you are.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself that it’s okay to step back and relax. I always advise others who may feel overwhelmed during their journey to remember that rest benefits your advancement.
