What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?

Every industry has its myths—stories insiders repeat until they sound like truth. But behind the slogans and the spin are unspoken (and sometimes unnoticed) realities – we asked some of the wisest folks we know to share what lies they’ve noticed in their industries.

I am being called to connect with our community. I have a tendency to isolate and spend a lot of time at home or in the comfort of the one-on-one deep conversations of a treatment room. I like to connect with an individual, help them feel better, and go home to my family, peaceful home, garden, and yard. I am feeling a push to get outside my comfort zone and connect with the Flagstaff community to network with other practitioners to see how we can support each other and our community in a deeper way. A normal day for K.Brat would be waking up, making breakfast for my family. Cleaning up toys every hour because my son is a curious and busy two year old. After he takes his first nap of the day I am always writing new music, listening to beat packs, and planning my events for the month. The events are normally shows, working on treatments for videos, and focusing on rollouts for the new music I’m working on. Read More>>

Advocating for Families in Labor can be costly.

At Birth You Desire, we believe that every family deserves to be seen, heard, and respected during birth. Recently, I was written up by hospital staff for honoring a client’s simple request for counter pressure during labor. While the staff may not have appreciated my presence, my responsibility is always to the birthing person and their expressed needs. Read More>>

It’s integrity for me. Every time.

Here’s the thing, intelligence is great, energy can be contagious, but if I can’t trust you, if your words and actions don’t line up then we’re done before we even start.

I’ve learned that who someone chooses to be when nobody’s watching will always tell you more than any resume, vibe, or performance ever could. I’d rather be surrounded by people who move with intention and keep their word, even when it’s inconvenient, than folks who are just smart or just energetic but lack character. Read More>>

Integrity. Lex Luthor and most major supervillains are intelligent. Intelligence is a value of mine, but I believe it also requires compassion, and it often doesn’t. Energy is certainly enviable but is useless by itself. Energy requires some sort of motivating factor. Integrity, on the other hand, requires a set of values that need to be adhered to and a conscience that keeps one in check. If I had to put my trust in anybody that held only one of those three qualities, it would be the person with integrity. You’re lucky to find a lot of it in this business. (laughs) Read More>>

Honestly, I feel like God is calling me to perform more, and for me it’s not just about the music—it’s about the testimonies I get to share on stage. A lot of my songs reflect my life experiences, but when I actually talk about how God came through for me, that’s what really seems to stick with people. It gives them something to think about beyond the music. The only thing is, performing used to be a huge challenge for me. I was honestly terrified of it. But I’ve been putting in the work, and little by little, I can feel myself getting better and more confident on stage. Read More>>

Lately, collecting art has been a real source of joy for me outside of work. I’ve been spending a lot of my downtime hunting for original or limited edition pieces, especially those with a unique story or perspective. I enjoy learning about the artists, exploring their backgrounds and creative processes. My home has gradually filled up with framed pieces and prints, so I’ve started rotating some out or finding new homes for them to make space for more. It’s a hobby that keeps me inspired and always curious. Read More>>

It’s interesting, actually. I’ve never been an impulsive person, yet I’ve always had a “let’s just get it done immediately” mentality which has served me quite well while navigating both business and creativity. With that said, recently I’ve learned the value behind what I call “taking a beat.” What I mean by that is being able to take a pause and assess what’s in front of you. Read More>>

I usually wake up around 4:00 am! I like to listen to music, make my coffee and journal my thoughts. After the journaling session, I say my prayers for the day and get dressed for the gym. Read More>>

Professionally, I love spending time thinking about instruction and the systems that make it work. I can spend hours thinking about how we will plan instruction, how we can create safe environments for educators, and sit with instructional leaders while we problem-solve current challenges.

Personally, I can get lost in books. Specifically, I love to read fantasy, mystery or thriller books. I laugh and cry with characters becoming over-invested in their stories. Add a few cups of coffee and I’ll be in heaven. Read More>>

The first 90 minutes of my day are focused on setting a positive tone for the day ahead. I start with prayer, which helps me center my thoughts and intentions. After that, I take care of my hygiene routine, ensuring I feel refreshed and ready to face the day. Once I’m dressed, I turn my attention to preparing a nutritious breakfast, which is essential for my energy levels. I also take my vitamins to support my health. Finally, I log into my computer to prepare for work, organizing my tasks and setting goals for a productive day. This structured routine helps me maintain balance and focus as I transition into my workday. Read More>>

A typical summer day looks like getting my kids breakfast and set up for the day before I go to work. In the summer I work shorter hours to be able to enjoy my kids in the afternoon. I usually seen 3-4 families for either virtual, office or home visits. These families have babies from 2-3 days old to as old as 2 years when working on weaning or sleep skills. Most of my babies are 2-6 weeks old. After work I try to take my kids to the park or the beach and we wind the day down with dinner, bath and bedtime together. It’s always challenging finding a work/family balance while also finding time to squeeze in a workout or a date night with my husband. Read More>>

When I truly get in the zone at the studio, hours can go by. There’ll be days where I stare at a blank canvas until the inspiration suddenly strikes. Next thing you know, I’m working on three paintings concurrently and am excited about each one. Nowadays, I find myself trying to recreate this feeling, but when it is authentic nothing compares. Absolutely integrity-100%!!! Intelligence and energy are both wonderful things but they are not really things we can control. Intelligence is generally a product of genes, heredity, upbringing. There’s not a whole lot we can do about it. We can certainly further our knowledge and education which is very respectable, but our baseline intelligence is generally not something we have a ton of power over.
Energy is a wonderful thing to see in people as well, but it can often be a result of biology and extraneous lifestyle factors; like work demands, children, household, etc. Read More>>

Something outside of work that brings me immense joy is attending a weekly dance class called “Rhythm Fusion.” It’s my sacred time to move, breathe, and reconnect with my body in a fun and freeing way. The music is always upbeat, the energy is contagious, and it gives me the perfect outlet to shake off any lingering stress. No matter what kind of week I’ve had, that class helps me reset and start fresh. It’s not just about dancing—it’s about letting go, recharging my spirit, and giving myself permission to play. The first 90 minutes of my day are all about grounding and getting focused. I wake up, say a quick prayer to start on a grateful note, then head straight to the kitchen for coffee because—priorities! From there, it’s usually emails, checking in on overnight orders, and either jumping into packing or planning content for the day in Planoly. It’s a mix of CEO and creative mode before the world fully wakes up. Read More>>
