I had to be willing to take calculated risks, in order to reach my full potential or reach my goals. Without risk there is no reward. Not every risk is going to be successful but the risk we take can lead to better opportunities & a better life. When I was 16 years old, I saw the movie Dead Poet’s Society in the theatre. Carpe diem! Seize the day! Make your life extraordinary! Robin Williams as Professor Keating changed my life. Then, when I was 20, I got myself kicked out of college. I had been an honor student on a scholarship, and I made some extremely poor choices. Read more>>

This is the first time in my life that I’m telling this story publicly and I pray it helps someone. This is the condensed version. It all started in July 2008. I think everything has to do with tennis. I have been playing tennis my whole life at the national level and then D1 at college and the sport made me understand that you cannot simply win matches if you do not take risks. I will start with taking a risk is better than not showing up or trying anything at all. I would admit it takes quite a few failures to develop a temperament and a mindset to see that you just took a risk and it’s actually not a failure, but it’s success. The end result a lot of people look at as winning or losing. Sometimes when I watch goats on a mountainside, I wonder what they’re doing out there–on the edge, in such precarious positions. Taking risks was my only choice to better myself and everyone around me. My grandfather always instilled me to believe in myself. The lack of opportunity made me want more out of life. Basically seeing how life was for me and my brothers we all knew that the only way for us make it out our grandparents home was to take risks. Never worrying about failure and being ok with whatever happens as long as I gave it my all. Read more>>

Risk is sometimes misrepresented. There are many types of risk. Sure there’s probability and expected quantitative loss, this is how risk is represented in economic models. But there’s also qualitative risk, which is harder to define but no less important. Read more>>

I believe being a risk taker is inherent to one’s personality. It’s not something you can practice or gain over time. It’s a trait that often comes with publicly perceived mental health issues or a variety of other disorders. Alternatively, it can manifest as being the over-the-top friend who you consider an adrenaline junkie. This trait is deeply rooted in psychological experiences. Personally, I love this aspect of myself because it translates into bursts of energy and a multi-dimensional way of thinking that tremendously benefits me in the business world. Read more>>
