Are you walking a path—or wandering?

The answer to whether you are walking or wandering often changes from season to season – life is fickle in that way. We asked some of the folks we most admire to reflect on whether they feel like they are walking or wandering and have shared some of their responses below.

John Parra

I’m walking the unbeaten path, one I’ve come to know in my own way. When I was starting out in my art career, it felt much more like wandering: searching, exploring, trying to find the way forward. Over time, that wandering turned into a clearer journey as I found my direction. Read More>>

I’m wandering in this season of my life! I feel like I’ve established pretty well-set routines when it comes to my day to day, my professional life, and my personal life. Anything outside of my to do’s is a free for all for me, and I have been enjoying this time of exploring, meandering, and letting myself follow my curiosity. Read More>>

This is an interesting and perhaps loaded question. Walking infers direction. That I certainly am doing. Wandering suggests a certain aimlessness. However, I would say that WANDERING is a far more beneficial term as an artist. I am walking while wandering through life at this point. Read More>>

I feel like I’m doing a bit of both. I’m walking a path that I spent a lifetime building for myself, but I’m also wandering because there’s so many amazing things I would like to accomplish still . I’m walking a clear and purposeful path as a 30-plus year corporate communications professional focused on helping people and institutions achieve success, whether as a member of a dynamic team capturing a compelling customer testimonial on camera or partnering with leaders company-wide to plan, develop, and execute communications that drive high performance. I feel that I am walking a path. Like any quest that comes with opportunities and challenges. I’ve proposed a theory that I’ve mentioned on my podcast, the Creative Brew-that everyone is given breadcrumbs on their path. Those hunches, gut feelings or intuition that compels us to go a specific path that fits for each person. Read More>>

I’m not strolling along some peaceful path. I’m being dragged, kicking and screaming, down the path. Success has a funny way of choosing the direction and pace for me, whether I think I’m ready or not. I’ll fight it, resist it, try to wander off into the weeds, but the work keeps pulling me forward. In my early years, I didn’t yet have a clear sense of who I was or the direction I wanted to take. I was still discovering my values and purpose, and, in many ways, I was exploring without a compass. Over time, through both personal growth and professional experience, I found clarity. Read More>>

That’s such a good question! I walk a narrow line it feels like I’m morphing into something much better a greater better version of myself. I find myself struggling with the realization of my purpose to the end goal. I have to remind myself who I am and remain on track. In a world of many distractions, and infractions. Read More>>

Interestingly, I always talk about my work as a walk through the night, definitely a wandering one – I don’t enjoy the idea of pressure when it comes to finding the way. I don’t like how we can’t just take a walk anymore, but instead, we have to go somewhere. Read More>>

Walking a path or wandering ? Well, in honesty neither. I prefer to float along in the river of life, steering where the currents make take me, and avoiding the rapids and hazards life may provide. The great Bruce Lee once said, ‘be like water’. And i have always taken that quote to heart. Water, like life, cannot be forced to anyones will. Read More>>

I’m definitely wandering. To me, walking a path means choosing the way that’s already been done before, it’s easier, it’s safe, it’s predictable, it’s boring. I’ve been there, done that. I’d rather wander. Wandering is where creativity happens. It’s where you find things no one’s ever seen before and create things that have never been done. Read More>>

Admittedly, I think I have wandered off the path — which is hard to admit. No one ever really wants to say they’re wandering because of the negative connotations. For me, at least, it implies weakness, lack of direction, failure, and uncertainty. Read More>>

Are you walking a path—or wandering?…. umm ‘Yes!’ I am walking a path AND wandering! I believe the wandering is what highlights the path. Everyone can pick a direction to move in but even while walking you should still wander (and wonder)…. otherwise you are walking a path with blindfolds on. It’s the wandering and questioning that redefines for you the path you are on. Read More>>

For most of my life, I believed strongly in walking a planned path. I saw planning as essential—like having a map. If you don’t know your destination and the steps to get there, it’s almost impossible to move from point A to point B. That mindset helped me achieve a lot in my life, because I was very structured and focused. Read More>>

Right now, I would say I’m wandering on a path. I’m at a slow yet steady pace that allows my mind to drift for a bit. I have no clear direction except for what’s in front of me and I intend on not looking back. With that, I am on this path just to see where it takes me. Read More>>

I like the Rumi quote, “When you start to walk on the way, the way appears.” To me, it suggests that strategy and planning can be overrated. Strategy is about options and choices—sometimes there are many, sometimes few. Planning implies that the choice has already been made and that all we need is a roadmap. Read More>>

I’d like to say I’m walking a path, but occasionally wander off of it to experience something new.
